Mental Health Education
Stigma is one of the biggest barriers to getting help. Let us bust the most common misconceptions about psychiatry and mental health medications.
Psychiatric medications are addictive and will change your personality permanently.
Fact: Most psychiatric medications — antidepressants, mood stabilisers, antipsychotics — are not addictive. They work to correct neurochemical imbalances. Your personality and values remain intact, and many patients feel more like themselves after treatment.
Seeing a psychiatrist means you are "mad" or have lost your mind.
Fact: Mental health conditions are medical conditions, just like diabetes or hypertension. Seeing a psychiatrist is a sign of self-awareness and courage. People seek psychiatric care for stress, sleep issues, anxiety, grief, and countless everyday challenges.
Once you start psychiatric medication, you have to take it forever.
Fact: Many people take medication for a defined period and then taper off under medical supervision. The duration depends on the condition and individual response. Your psychiatrist will work with you to plan the right approach.
Therapy is just talking and cannot really help with serious mental illness.
Fact: Psychotherapy has robust scientific evidence behind it. CBT, DBT, and other modalities produce measurable, lasting changes in brain function and behaviour. For many conditions, therapy combined with medication outperforms either treatment alone.
Depression or anxiety is just weakness — you can snap out of it with willpower.
Fact: Depression and anxiety involve complex neurobiological changes in the brain. They are no more a sign of weakness than a broken bone. Willpower alone cannot correct a neurochemical imbalance, just as it cannot heal a fracture. Treatment works.
Children cannot have real mental health problems — they will grow out of it.
Fact: Mental health conditions absolutely affect children and adolescents. Early intervention produces far better outcomes than waiting. Untreated childhood mental health issues can persist and worsen into adulthood. Getting help early matters enormously.
